Our Archive

Thames Barge Greta

The Trust has an eclectic collection of minutes, albums, photos, plans, artworks and various 'ephemera'. They have been collected since the founding of the club in 1948 and have had a variety of homes over the years, ranging from Members' lounges and lofts to the store room above a butcher's shop!

They are now in the process of moving to a new, more suitable home. When this is complete they will be searchable by members of the public. Please check back here for a statement on when they will be available.

More on the history of the Club/Trust and its archive will be available here soon.

Family History

Skipper at Barge wheel

Are you looking for someone who sailed a Barge? Ways you may find them are through Port Registers and Crew Returns. The National Archive, National Maritime Museum and Local Record Offices may be able to help with these, though many returns were removed to Newfoundland!

Also try the Society for Sailing Barge Research, based in Faversham.

In all cases, the more information you have on names, dates, Barge names or registry no's, locations or companies, even if they are 'family folklore', the more chance you have of finding someone.

History of Barges

Thames Barge Transoms

See a Short History of Thames Barges for information about their development, trading days, the decline from commercial activity and rise again to a new use.

If you are looking for the whereabouts and present condition of a particular Barge, contact the archivist or the Society for Sailing Barge Research, who have created a gazetteer of Barges.
