Centaur
Launched at Harwich in 1895 by J & H Cann who were regarded by some bargemen as the finest wooden barge builders. The shape and style was thought to be second to none. Centaur is a very pretty barge with an elegant transom stern and a lovely sheer to her bows.
Pudge
One of the last wooden barges built, she was launched at Rochester in 1922. A Dunkirk ‘Little Ship’ she played an important part in the evacuation of troops from the beaches in 1940 and is credited with saving 300 soldiers from the beaches. She traded as an auxillary and later as a motor barge until 1968.
Barges: a Short History
A century ago over two thousand Thames sailing barges were used to transport goods around Britain and to Europe. Usually sailed by two men they were as at home in the shallow Essex creeks as sailing in the North Sea and English Channel.
Now only about thirty one remain in sailing condition.
