Two intrepid barge crews braved the strong winds on Saturday for the Blackwater Match.
Niagara collected the championship points for the Senior Staysail class, with a course set to the Bench Head buoy and back to Osea.
Half-sized sailing barge, Cygnet, sailed single-handedly by skipper, Des Kaliszewski, collected the points for the Staysail class, with a course set down to the Thirslet buoy.
Congratulations to both barges.
Nice to see so many barges at Maldon this year, ready for the match, including Pudge, Centaur, Adieu, Melissa, Niagara, Edith May, Repertor, Reminder, Marjorie, Mirosa, Edme, Hydrogen, Dinah and Cygnet.
Due to extreme weather conditions: N or NW severe gale 9 in the morning’s forecast, most barges did not join the race.
Thanks to the Blackwater Match committee and supporters for all their hard work organising the event. Apologies for announcing that the Match was cancelled, on Facebook, when, in fact, it was down to individual barge skippers to decide whether or not to take part, in view of the severe gale warning in the forecast.
The next Barge Match is the Swale Match on the 8 August. Centaur will be taking part.
If you fancy joining us on board for the event, there are still a few places available for a 3-day trip at a cost of £200, which includes meals and accommodation. We will be sailing from Upnor, on the River Medway, to the Match and returning to Upnor.
You will be welcome to get involved in hands-on barge sailing as much as you wish.

Let’s hope for better weather!
