Join Us For The 2014 Medway Thames Sailing Barge Match

Barges anchored after the race

Come Sailing With Us In The Medway Barge Match

Thames Sailing Barge Centaur will be taking part in this year’s Medway Barge Match and you can join the crew for a 3-day mini-break, including meals (cooked by you the crew) for just £200!

No previous sailing experience is required. You can book with old friends or come on your own and make some new ones on your sailing adventure.

Centaur will be leaving Maldon Quay in Essex on Friday 6th of June at 06:00 and heading to Kent, crossing the Thames Estuary. If you wish, you can extend your sailing holiday by joining us on the barge the night before, Thursday 5th, and enjoy the delights of Maldon at no extra cost.

We’ll be taking the ancient trading route along the edge of the Maplin Sands. Bring your binoculars for a good view of the estuary wildlife and the Thames shipping. We’ll be passing war-time relics such as the Red Sand Towers and the wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery. You might even see a seal or porpoise if you’re lucky!

We will be anchoring at Gillingham on Friday evening together with the other barges taking part in the Match, which may include Ardwina, Cambria, Lady of the Lea, Edith May, Niagara, Reminder, Repertor, Adieu, Edme, Marjorie, Mirosa and Xylonite. This is always a good photo opportunity, especially at sunset.

On Saturday morning, 7th June, after a hearty breakfast, the racing starts at 09:15. The barges will head downstream with the ebb tide, returning to Gillingham for the evening prize-giving ashore at the Medway Yacht Club at 19:00.

Sunday will see us heading back to Maldon, returning to the quay at approximately 20:00.
