Come and join us aboard Thames Sailing Barge Pudge for the 109th Medway Barge Match
The 2017 Barge Match season gets underway on the River Medway on Saturday 3 June with 12 Thames sailing barges registered to enter the Medway Match.
In the Coasting Class we have Lady Of The Lea, the engineless Cambria and our very own Pudge. Will Cambria win for the fifth consecutive year or can Pudge, with her brand new staysail and clean bottom, hold her off?
The Restricted Stays’l class is set to be a hard-fought contest this year, with old rivals Niagara and Edith May battling it out on their home waters. They will be joined by Repertor, Reminder and a welcome return of the Ironsides. All five have a chance of winning, so this will be a real spectacle.
The Bowsprit class includes the two engineless barges, Edme & Mirosa. Mirosa managed to beat the Edme last year by just five minutes. Can she do it this time? Adieu and Marjorie, will also be competing, making the Bowsprits another hotly contended class.
Sail Across The Thames Estuary
You can join us aboard Pudge at Maldon in Essex on the evening of Thursday 1st June, ready to sail on Friday 2nd June at around 05:00h.
We will make our way across the Thames Estuary to the River Medway, arriving on Friday evening, where there will be a run ashore to the Medway Yacht Club for the Skippers’ Briefing.
Medway Match start is off Gillingham Pier
On the morning of Saturday 3rd June the Coasting Class start gun will be heard off Gillingham Pier at 09:30h and the racing will begin. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars.
We’ll return to the Medway Yacht Club in the evening for the prize-giving event at 19:30h. Live Entertainment will be provided by English folk band The Tonic.
Pudge will be staying on the Medway ready for the Battle of Medway‘s 350th Anniversary events over the next two weeks, including the Medway in Flames finale.
Price for Match Day, Saturday 3 June, with full board including your meal at the prize-giving event, is just £95.
The sail aboard Pudge from Maldon on the River Blackwater to the River Medway on Friday 2 June costs £65, including meals.
If booking both days for £160, accommodation on board is included on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
